MicroMouse 2008
Phaedrus Systems was at the 2008 Micromouse competition. We donated prizes of an IAR-STM32 Cortex Dev kits and embedded Internet books.
As usual it was a great fun day of serious competition with many entrants including overseas entries from Iran, India Holland and Germany.
There are junior and senior events in simple robotics such as wall and line followers, drag races and maze solving. For the last few years there has also been a side event for bi-pod (walking) robots.
Competition is fierce but fun. Competitors help each other to get the best results with their robots... on one occasion the help provided knocked the person helping out of the prizes! However this competition is more about the taking part and the technical fun rather than winning at all costs.. Though the robot that won the speed race round the outside loop of the maze was the exception.. It was designed purely to win that competition, with no other frills. However it amused everyone and prompted Tony Wilcox to say that next year the rules for that class may not be completely open!
The IAR-Cortex Kit was won by Peter Harrison whose day job is IT Manager at Cannock Chase Technical College where he runs their MICROMouse Resource centre among other things. He is also a glutton for punishment as he helps run a monthly micromouse club at the Technology Innovation Centre in Birmingham!
Peter competed in the final of the Senior Maze Solver . Picture of Peter, left, receiving his Certificate from Martin Smith with Tony Wilcox to the right. Tony organises and runs the event which is why he now looks a lot older than he did when he started!
Peter's mouse currentty runs a DSPic but he is intending to base new models on the STM32 CORTEX part so he was especially pleased to win the kit.
